Fin rot

Fin rot is one of the most common occurring diseases found in aquarium fish.
This disease can be caused by several organisms, but mostly by gram-negative bacteria. Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, or Myxobacteria are the main colperates. If treated early it can usually be cured easily, but nothing is done the fish will eventually die and other fish in the tank can become sick.

Cause:
Fin rot is caused, like most diseases, by stress factors like polluted water that weaken the fish. But also by an overcrowded tank, bad food or aggressive tank mates. The stress makes the fish vulnerable to bacteria that are always present in the water.

Symptoms:
The fins of the fish start to show white edges, or start to become shredded and become shorter and shorter. Sometimes a secondary infection can occur by Flexibacter or fungus. Which are hard to distinguish from each other. As the disease progressed bloody patches will appear and the fins could be completely eaten away and the infection spreads to the body of the fish.

Treatment:
- Identify and solve the roote of the problem.
- Add an antibiotic specific to gram negative bacteria to the water, make sure to complete the treatment to avoid getting resistant bacteria.
- In this case it’s not a good idea to raise the temperature to much because it will benefit the bacteria that cause the infection more than it does the fish (raising the temperature raises the metabolism of the fish so the immune system can work harder).
- Add a bit of salt to the water to help the fish and prevent secundary infection by fungus.

Πρωτη ενεργεια ΣΩΣΤΗ αλλαγη νερου.
Μετα, προσθηκη αλατιου (αν επιτρεπεται αναλογα το ειδος ψαριου, στο μονομαχο επιτρεπεται μεχρι ενα οριο).
Μπορει να γινει σε μορφη μπανιου με υπερτονικο διαλυμα, σε ξεχωριστο δοχειο και με υψηλο αερισμο μεσω αεραντλιας.
