The active ingredients of the specially fermented barley straw cause the algae to die off - even floating algae (green water)! Comparative tests have shown that the type and extent of fermentation has a decisive influence on the effectiveness of barley straw products. The barley straw must be organically grown, i.e. without the use of pesticides and artificial fertilisers. Long-term tests have shown no negative influences on fish and plants. It is believed that substances released by the straw are absorbed by the algae on contact. These substances substantially reduce the metabolic rate of the algae, decreasing the frequency at which the algae divides.
