''The most popular cichlids in the aquarium trade are those from Lake Malawi, and understandably so, because they are the most colorful. As you have read, coloration of a given species varies from location to location in Lake Malawi, and many species are found only at certain locations. Advanced aquarists are eager to get the newest importation from the lake, or the most colorful variety, so they command high prices. The exporters have a home base to which they bring captured fish and process them for export. What a nuisance when a particularly desirable cichlid lives at the other end of the lake! The solution: Bring the cichlid to where you operate and establish it on the nearest convenient reef. That is just what has been done. One reef at Thumbi West Island is now known as ''the aquarium'' by the people living in the nearest village because it has so many alien species. Although the reef is little studied, some research has been done on the extent to which the different strangers have succeeded, and it varies. The critical issue is whether the successful new species displace those already there... I have been hearing recently that collectors in Lake Tanganyika have also been moving cichlids from their home areas to more convenient reefs where they do not normally occur. These translocations have the potential to disrupt the local assemblages of fishes, even potentially extirpating local races.'' (The Cichlid Fishes του George Barlow σελ.254-255)
